ALBANY - The 19-year-old intern who first told cops Harlem Assemblyman Adam
Clayton Powell 4th got her drunk and raped her now says the sex was
consensual, the Daily News learned yesterday.
"Adam didn't rape me," the woman, whose name still hasn't been released,
said in a written statement to detectives in Colonie, the Albany suburb
where the encounter took place.
She described her romp with the Democrat lawmaker in graphic detail, and
said she only accused Powell, 43, of rape at the urging of her 28-year-old
boyfriend. The woman, who is from Guam, said the boyfriend became angry
after learning of the tryst and alternately characterized her as a "whore"
and as a victim.
"If it wasn't for [my boyfriend] getting involved by contacting the Albany
Police or by speaking to my parents, I would have never reported Adam for
rape," the woman said.
The statement obtained yesterday by The News was made to Colonie Police last
week after the woman initially went to a local hospital and claimed she was
raped. Police had released a copy of the intern's rape complaint but did not
disclose her subsequent seven-page statement recanting the charge.
"In the aftermath of this young woman recanting, where does Mr. Powell go to
get his reputation back?" said Murray Richman, an attorney who has
represented Powell in the past.
Powell, who is divorced, had no comment yesterday.
